I've recently set up debian GNU/linux with KDE on my PC, and I was trying to load hushtools in Mozilla Firebird, and it wouldn't load the applets. I thought this was because I didn't have java set up, so I tried to use a java IRC chat applet, and that gave me a pop-up asking me if I wanted to install Java, so I did, but it didn't work; even after I had created a systematic link of libjavaplugin_oji.so into my /plugins directory. I have read through the instructions on the mozilla site many a time, but I still can't get it to work. I've probably done something wrong, but I don't know what. I know that other plugins work, as I managed to install the flash plugin without any problems.

All suggestions and advice is welcome.

I had exactly the same problem and have just got it working by installing the Blackdown java package, http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/mirrors.html, and following their instructions.

I basically did exactly what I'd done with the download from Sun (putting Java into /usr/local and setting up the link as you did) but the Blackdown one seems to work.
