Java doesn't start

My kernel is 2.6.9-1.667smp, Fedora Core 3.
The browser is Firefox 1.5.

When I go to time.gov and select a time zone, it requires Java animation. No time flashes. Yet when I go to "Click here to download plugin", and go through the process of installing jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.rpm, Java still doesn't start.
In my browser, all the Java opitons are set to yes.

What's going on and how can I fix this?

Basically, for me, the answer was this:

cd /usr/local/bin/firefox/plugins/
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

You know, this the first time my machine swapped in months, ever since upgraded to 512MB. The joy of Java.
