Java 3D for Linux

I was going to experiment with Java 3D, but from what I can see, it doesn't exist for Linux.

Is this really true?

Here:

http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux/...3d-status.html

Documentation for Java 3D API is found here:

http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/

I'd recommend you to forget about using Java 3D. It's slow (you know how Java is...), it's not update as Java and the future of it is quite uncertain...

Good luck

thanks for your reply.

Given the uncertain future of Java 3D, what does one do for cross-platform 3D?

Hi again allelopath!

Well, OpenGL, glut and SDL would do it, I guess . I'm don't want to make you give up on Java 3D though. Java was pretty lame years ago and looked like it was dead. Then Sun released a major update, Java 2, and it got quite popular.

Maybe Sun plans a nice update in the future for Java 3D, since the world has turned in a crazy 3D ground. But that is just a wild, senseless guess .

If you think that C++ and OpenGL is too much of a hassle (I do, specially due the lack of tutorials in this subject, though, OpenGL Red and Blue books are nice...), I'd recommend pygame:

www.pygame.org

it's portable, it's hooked with SDL and can be hooked with OpenGL. There're some good tutorials on the net and even an irc channel, quite active on FreeNode (If I'm not mistaken).

I never did anything 3D with pygame though, mind you
