JACK and feedback/muting
 

hi peeps, just got a new soundcard (SB x-fi xtreme music) and the sound is wounderful. I am a musician and use guitarix and ardour alot in linux and all Im getting is serious feedback when I turn up the volume in guitarix. from what I can tell the vu meter isnt moving and when I try to connect jack ports in ardour I get the same.... SCREEEEEEEEEEEEE. Everythings plugged in correctly because the asio driver for windows works beautifully. also, when I fire up qjackctl it automatically connects the input and it doesnt show in the connections. afaik it should be muted until I connect, right? so this might be where my feedback is coming from I think. I just dont know how.

Slackware 14.2 x64 ... Do I re-build jack/qjackctl? thanks in advance

well i will say this:
jackaudio provides you with the capability to route sound as if they were cables that are plugged into jacks on mixing boards.
you must have plugged them wrong, creating feedback.

when I fire up JACK everything is fine. the software isn't muting the input when software (jack ports) are opened. Guitarix and Ardour will (or should automatically) mute the input and pass it to the software port.

What I am after is:

...I have a ZOOM G5 here and am using it as a pre-amp. What I would like to have is the capability to use the stomp-boxes like the tube screamer and DS1, among others; plugged into guitarix or ardour so I can use guitarix's tube emulation, it's not bad.

Currently I am able to fire up JACK and use the G5's amp simulators which are fine, but I can't record if the input isn't being passed to the software. I am also using qjack on Windows because it makes routing the input to the software easier. I am pretty sure I know how to use the interface. I am not however, a seasoned jack audio professional. Using guitarix provides a zillion effects post processing the original signal. I want.

since there's no jackaudio for windows, the implied comparison in post #3 doesn't make sense.
please understand my use of "as if" (i.e. virtual).
please understand how jackaudio works.

anyhow, my point stands:
feedback can happen with jackaudio.
maybe you should use a more graphical connection manager(*), so you can SEE better what's going on.

(*) sorry the name of the software eludes me atm, but i know it exists.

I guess I will look around for gui's for jack then. it's really weird, as soon as I fire up jack on linux I get a signal from my guitar and this should not happen until I either (a)use the connect section of qjack or (b)fire up guitarix and have the software do it automagically for me. As amazing as the sb x-fi xtreme music sounds, I may have gotten exactly what I paid for when I bought it oem from amazon. ($50) when I have the money I'll buy the x-fi platinum which comes with the front plate I can line my guitar directly into.

still, since the card/software works just fine on windows there must be something totally obvious I am overlooking. I much prefer linux :)
