itunes nightmare..... alternatives to wake up...

Hey,

Like probably other Linux users, I have an iphone and data wise, its working great, I have horde installed as my group-ware on my local home server and sync my calendar/contacts with it, and gmail for my email does the job fine. the only problem I still have to solve is the mp3/podcast/audiobook stuff, especially the mp3 stuff....

right now, I am using a virtual machine with windows XP and itunes installed in it. Useless to say, I fundamentally hate itunes (not going in this topic here, I would need 5 other threads)...

I am wondering if there is a solution to sync the music content on my iphone from within linux? AKA avoid at all costs itunes that rot my life to a point never expected before???

Like I said, I am searching for music sync only, no PIM (calendar/email/contacts) sync.
all comments/suggestions appreciated!
Thanks!

Unless you are talking about the iPhone 4G, there is full support for the iPhone in libgpod, so any of the major Linux audio players can be used to sync music with it. I have used Amarok in the past to automatically download new podcasts and sync them to my Nano.

If you are looking to purchase music, then you could check out Amazon's service. That is client software and DRM-free, just purchase the song and you are given an MP3/ZIP which you can throw right on the iPhone.

Now if you are talking about the iPhone 4G, you will have to wait awhile. libgpod does not currently support writing to the iPhone 4G, iPod Touch 4G, or the iPad.

Yeah I was referring to the iPhone 4.... How long do you think before there is some native support in Linux? iTunes really sucks.... Really sucks

No way to tell really; could be tomorrow, could be never. With every new iPod generation, Apple implements some new trick to break all the third-party syncing tools. Of course, each generation gets a little more advanced, and takes a little longer to figure out.

I have not been able to find any word about what progress has been made, perhaps somebody else on the forums has heard something?

Yep the only reason why I bought an iplhone is for it's convenience to use not it's design philosophy. Not wanting to initiate a debate here on apple vs others but that's why I'll never buy another apple product.

Yes maybe somebody else has some info to share ... I'll be patient.

The thing I don't get is the fact that there is tons of alternatives to iTunes in windows so others have found a way to communicate with the 4th generation devices but the technology has not been ported to Linux yet...
