Ok! Here is the problem....

I have a Duron 750 Mhz processor on a darned K7SEM (ECS) mother%*%board.....The video is built in with the mainboard itself and so have not installed any video cards...
The problem is that linux doesn't seem to identify the on board VGA crap and I cant change the display modes and I can't adjust the color(man the settings for color is horrible)....I thought that I screwed with X-installation...Tried every damn thing that was mentioned in howtos and hownottos.....And I finally figured that I need goddamn drivers for this (Yeah I went to the web site and they have VGA drivers for windoze systems but not for linux ) ...

Now I have crbbed enuff.....What is the solution for this? If I add a compatible video card, solve my problem??? I mean will adding the video card in addition to what is on the mainboard solve the problem???

What is the video chipset? What distro and verson of X are you using?

Thanks jharris....The distro is RH 7.0 with the default X that ships with it ( I think itz 2.0 ?) .... It's an AMD duron....I can tell you what chipset it is as soon as I get home...

i think redhat 7.0 has X4.0 on it, but don't quote me on that. AMD Durons come with the AMD IronGate chipset, usually, which is supported under linux, but early versions (of the hardware, not the software)are a bit buggy, but work for the most part. you're probably going to have to get a new video card... linux users have been trying to get built-in modems (winmodems to linmodems) for years with limited success, and i think the support for built-in video cards is even smaller.

Just one question here...Will installing a new video card solve the problem? Will the video card replace the on-board video adaptor or is it only an addition/supplement to the existing on-board video?)
Please let me know. Buying a video card is a more viable option for me.....If thatz a solution then yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :)

If I remember correctly, you can set up the new video card to be used in place of the on-board video, but you may have to look in you BIOS/CMOS to change a few settings.

a new video card would more or less just replace your old one. i bought a system with a winmodem (on board modem) and i just replaced it with a linux-compatible one. it's much easier than trying to get the on-board components working. i suspect that the same would be true for a video card.
so, yes, getting a new video card is probably your best bet.
