Issues with K3B
 

Hi,

I recently installed K3B under Arch and copying dvd's works fine, it asks for a DL disc , I put one in, and bam no issues copying the disc. However If I got the section of the K3B program that just RIPS titles, and I right click, "rip title" it instally errors with this screen:

Can Anyone Please Help ?

THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN, im trying to totally abolish windows, and dvd burning is the last thing.

You may have already done this, but if you haven't it may help.
Have a look at what the "show debugging..." button tells you when the error appears.
It usually has quite a bit of info which will be useful for others trying to help.

OK, I have looked at the debug info and it doesn't mean much to me.
I did a quick search to see if this was a known problem. It turned up a couple of times but I didn't see any solution posted anywhere.

Is there an earlier version of K3B available for your distro that you can try?

I tried 'rip DVD' with 'k3b-1.0.5' yesterday ( on pclos 2009 )
and it displays the exact same errors.

Can you possibly use an older version ?

If you have tested an older version that works, can you tell me the version name or package name? Anyone else have this bug?

I am using K3b-1.0.4 on Fedora 9 x86_64 and it has been troublefree, although I have really only been using it to write CD/DVD data.
I just went through the exercise of ripping an audio CD and that worked OK. I can't find the 'RIP title' option to try that, perhaps it's not available on version 1.0.4. Where/how do you get to that option on v 1.0.5?

You have to insert a DVD into your DVD drive, and in K3B click on tools > Rip DVD titles, OR click on the dvd on the tree view to the left, and when it complains and wants you to go to the copy dialog just hit continue. Please test this for me if you can.

I don't see a tools option here on v1.0.0.4 and don't see anything like the behaviour you describe.
I inserted 'Rumpole of the Bailey' DVD and in the left tree view it shows the files (or whatever they are) 'AUDIO_TS' and 'VIDEO_TS'. If I select these two whatevers to be copied and choose 'Further actions...' > 'Copy DVD' all proceeds as expected. It is possible that my 'Further actions...' option button is the same as 'Tools', but I don't have a 'RIP DVD titles' option.

Either I have a severe case of domestic blindness or what you are seeing is unique to v1.0.5.

Hey, you tried. So, even in your version, you dont see an entry in the "tree view" to the left that reads the name of your dvd? Maybe it is unique to newer versions. If you click on the dvd name it should bring up a dialog box. Its a good program but it has its issues, thats why I use K9copy for this operation of DVD Ripping.

When I did the test for you, the DVD came up in the tree view as if it were a directory with the name 'Rumpole of the Bailey', and it's contents as reported.
I just tried all that again and this time I didn't see a typical tree view of the DVD and it's files but the name of the DVD at the top of the tree view with a DVD icon to the left. If I left click on the name then I get a dbox which says...

It is intended to rip single titles from a video DVD into a compressed format such as XviD. Menu structures are completely ignored.
If you intend to copy the plain Video DVD vob files from the DVD (including decryption) for further processing with another application, please use the following link to access the Video DVD file structure: videodvd:/
If you intend to make a copy of the entire Video DVD including all menus and extras it is recommended to use the K3b DVD Copy tool.

and the link does nothing, no response at all, not even an error message.

and if I then click on 'continue' I get...

Please install libxxxx for me as the program stated and try for me. Thank you so much for your help.

OK, I installed libdvdcss and went through the steps previously listed, and things started to work...to an extent.
What I think is a list of titles appears in the RH window and a new icon (tool icon?) 'RIP Video DVD...' appears in the lower window, but I have yet to figure out what one has to do to proceed from there.
The attached screen shot shows what I am seeing.

So, in my case with v1.0.4 it would seem that libdvdcss makes things work a lot better, although as I say, I have not actually managed to find or press the right combination of buttons to actually RIP anything. It does look to be quite a step closer though.

A slightly later post than my story after having installed libdvdcss.
It seems that one also needs 'transcode' to be installed. Having done that the 'start ripping' is no longer greyed out and it all looks good.
So, if you haven't already done so, install libdvdcss and transcode and see how you go.
If that doesn't fix your problem then I would definitely remove v1.0.5 and install v1.0.4 and try again.
