Issues with CUPS under debian etch

Hello everybody,

recently I bought a laser printer (brother hl2030). Brother offers some proprietary drivers for it: one for the cups - system and one called lpr-cupswrapper or something. I tried to use them but they did not work well( in fact, they didnt at all). Fortunately, I found a ppd - file that enables cups to use the printer - in a weird way: printing out pdf files from within evince works perfectly, ps files work mostly, sometimes the printout starts well but then comes up with some postscript commands being printed out in between the regular data, sometimes the printout just stops. moreover, the lpr - command does not do anything at all. there is no error reported neither is cups showing any printing jobs being treated when involving lpr. I read in the net, that one needs a package called lpr-bsd-tools or something similar like that, so I checked wether they were installed ( they were) and reinstalled those, without any change in the behavior. unfortunately, I am writing this at the pc lab at university so i cant do any listings of my configuration files or stuff right now, if someone has an idea what could be the reason for these troubles i would be pleased to get some hint. otherwise please tell me which kind of inormation ( which files, logs or so) you think you need to make some suggestions...

thanks a lot
Michael

Cups already has an entry for HL-2060 which is supposed to work with the 2030 also. I use either the KDE Control Centre to install new printers, or the CUPS web interface at http://localhost:631. Just choose HL-2060 from the scrolling selection box.

I see the lpr command on my Debian system comes from cupsys-bsd package.

There's some new drivers for the 2030 advertised at

http://solutions.brother.com/hl2030_all/en_us/

specifically for Debian - maybe these are the ones you used. I've never had much luck with drivers downloaded from manufacturers' sites.
