Issues with AUCTex on FedoraCore 2

Hi, I'm new to linux, and I'm trying to install AUCTex so I can type my math stuff. I downloaded the new 11.53 version, and apparently installing should be as easy as writing ./configure, make, and make install. However, ./configure brings up "no such file or directory", and if I direct it straight to the AUCTex folder (root/Desktop/auctex-1153/configure), it does some stuff, and then ends by failing to find (or run?) makeinstall.in. Does someone know what I should do?

Thanks,
Elena.
