Issues in sound and power management in kernel 2.6.6.
After using generic and biniary kernels, I have finally configured my first kernel, 2.6.6-rc1. It took me two tries, but I got it, except for two things: the console won't beep (IE, hitting down endlessly in bash doesn't produce the beep), either in an xterm or at the straight VGA console, but my soundcard works in X.
The other issue is one of power managment. My box doesn't power itself off (IE, it kills itself instead of me having to kill it by the button when I issue "shutdown -h now"). Both 2.4.x kernels I used had both of these features. I've dug through menuconfig, but can't find any option to enable to get these to work. Anyone have experience with 2.6 kernels that can steer me in the right direction?
Any help would be appriecated.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Did compiled in APM support in the kernel? In case you compiled it as a module, did you loaded it?

Yeah, APM is compiled in, I've also configured it so that it uses real-mode calls to power off. I've also got a few ACPI functions enabled too, could this be it?

I am not sure about this. Typically one only uses either one of APM and ACPI. But it probably does not hurt if you complied both. Whichever loaded first takes control.
What happens if you run "halt -p" or "poweroff"?

A search of /var/log/messages told me that the kernel was disabling APCI because "your BIOS if from 2000 and too old", passing the option APCI=force at boot time took care of it. Is there an option to get the PC speaker to beep? I've looked in messages and don't see anything else odd. I've got the correct sound card compiled in and it's detected at boot time. If I'm working in an xterm the beep signal is recieved, and it will beep in a kernel that beeps, what have I done wrong?

See what your "bell-style" is in /etc/inputrc. If it is mentioned, the line should read
Code:
set bell-style audible
