Issues connecting to yahoo messenger via pidgin

hello, I have two machines, a windows machine and an Linux machine, and much prefer Linux ( Ubuntu 11.04). My issue is via Windose, I can access yahoo instant messenger with no issues from my office network, but if I log off there, and try to connect via pidgin from the same network, it never connects? Are they using different protocols? If I go home, it will connect. I'd like to be able to connect via my office network, just like I could via windows. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Assuming that you've entered your username and password correctly in pidgin, the first thing I would check (if possible) is if the office network firewall or other security software is blocking pidgin from connecting.

What ports

I though as much but what ports is it using? I still can't figure out why YM connects fine on the same network, but pidgin doesn't.

If you configured it correctly, it would use the same port and protocol as YIM. I have the same setup at home-- Windows/YIM and Ubuntu/Pidgin on the same PC, and have no problems with it. Don't know anything about your company's IT, but firewalls and other business-level security software can be configured to only allow certain programs access to the internet, regardless of which port it uses. If Pidgin is not on the "allow" list, it can't connect to the outside server.
