issue with Network-Connection package after re-install

after a problem with network connection manager i had to re-install the package. uninstalled it then a reboot and installed then another reboot, even though i have network connectivity and ping results are fine i cant see my LAN connection in the network connection manager. its simply empty and i cant seem to re-enable the tray icon for it.
how can i fix these?

I believe the network manager icons is part of the notifications applet (I think network connection manager is part of gnome). Right click on your panel, add notification applet (I can't recall the exact name) and see if it returns.
