Ah so it has been solved. Thank you much for all of your help. The problem was my
Mac has no way of displaying an X sever so I had to download XQuartz. This is an open source implementation of Xorg for Mac which worked upon the first try. Thank you all

I ssh’d from my Mac to Debian machine with a terminal. I ended up installing a program called XQuartz. This allows X11 windows to be opened on a Mac, my problem all along
