It was on my Suse 9.1 disks.
The default install ran notepad right away, ran Spider Solitaire without sound, ran my old accounting software -- like Windows 3.1 vintage.
Runs my very new accounting software with some handicaps, e.g. dialogue boxes don't display properly.
The routine seems to be that you have to check the logging and tweak your wine so that your software runs properly. Unfortunately this seems quite difficult to learn unless you are already quite knowledgeable about how Windows works.

in ubuntu and debian you can do a simple apt-get wine to get it configured and installed.

It's on Fedora too. Just YUM it in from the Extras repositories.
