Is VLC transcoding completely broken?

Has anyone been able to transcode video in VLC?

I've tried it on four different computers:
VLC 1.0.3 on Fedora 12
VLC 1.0.4 on Gentoo
VLC 0.8.6 on Debian Lenny
VLC 1.0.3 on Windows XP

None of them have worked, regardless of the output format I chose. I tried using the wizard in the GUI as well as the command-line method.

So basically, I'd like to know if this is downright broken and I should quit trying, or if there's some hope.

I've used it before successfully.

Have you reviewed the following?:

Did you get some specific error codes or messages that might enable us to help you sort this all out?

Usually something like

[00000300] mux_ps private: Open
[00000335] ffmpeg encoder error: cannot find encoder MPEG-2 Video
[00000293] stream_out_transcode private error: cannot find encoder ((null))
[00000293] stream_out_transcode private error: cannot create video chain
[00000333] main packetizer error: cannot create packetizer output (theo)
[00000300] mux_ps private: Close
[00000281] main playlist: nothing to play

ffmpeg is installed, and the line I used is the same as the one on the link you posted:

Code:
vlc "C:\Movies\Your File.asf" :sout='#transcode{vcodec=mp2v,vb=4096,acodec=mp2a,ab=192,scale=1,channels=2,deinterlace,audio-sync}:std{access=file, mux=ps,dst="C:\Movies\Your File Output.ps.mpg"}'
Of course, the file names were changed to movies that actually exist, and I tried using other codecs.

Re: Vlc

Uninstall everything that you installed about VLC and install the package in the repository list intended for your distro.

The easiest way to do this is by going to:
System -> Administration -> Add/Remove Software
In the search box write vlc and install the package.

I use ffmpeg for transcoding. Transcoding with vlc is a real adventure ... on the terminal.
