Is Ubuntu 7.10 Sun-java5 broken?

As a Java-developer I would love Java to work out of the box for me. I always try, and almost always fail to do so.

I tried to install sun-java5-jdk and all dependencies. After that, no java could be started and I couldn't find where the packagemanager whould have left its files. Does someone have ideas? Is it known to be broken somehow?

My current fix: I reverted to the trusted dyi-method; my system is for one user (me) anyway, and so I downloaded the jdk from the sun website, and installed it in my homedirectory.

Have a look at 'update-alternatives' and its man-page. I don't use
debian (*buntu) OR java enough to care to know about that kind of
breakage, but it may tell you stuff about how java is set-up.

Cheers,
Tink

I hadn't tried update-alternatives yet, but there was no java installed at the moment that I (re)installed sun-java5; so I expected the java executable and stuff somewhere else.

The default way I do java development is with manually downloaded installers from java.sun.com, installing them either in /usr/local/ or in my homedirectory.

I guess I should be "complaining" in the ubuntu thread or in the ubuntu forums and not here Thanks for the update-alternatives hint, I can always try to use that next time.
