is there project to free wmv codec?


There is project to free swf and more close formats.

Is there smething with wmv codec?

The currect codec of w32codecs have a legal issues in some contries.

WMV is proprietary to Microsoft, so its highly unlikely that there will be a free implementation that does not have legal issues.

I would think some of the open source MP4 project could make their codecs compatible. Gates and his 'evil empire' are very famous for taking a standard changing one little thing here and there and calling it their own. Look at Java and JavaScript.

I'm quite sure JavaScript was developed independently with help from Netscape, which at the time was in a crusade against IE (like we all are!).

ffmpeg is working on a free implementation but thus far they don't have a working release.

EDIT: I should be more specific, they don't have a working WMV9 implementation but according to Google older versions are working okay.
