Is there linux software for extracting/editing audio from a .mpg format movie

Just looking for something like Sony Vegas, but for linux. I guess what I'm looking for is software that's able to extract/edit audio from any type of movie file.

I'm not a video man myself but you could try clipping it out using Kdenlive, it's a movie editing program that came with my distro and is probably available for the ones that it doesn't come as.
