on top of kedit window is a button.......settings- it has a drop down
menu...........select configure--------
one of the options is disable backups when saving text,..........
kwrite might be the same way.......you'll just have to.........
investigate for yourself.

Which text editor are you refering to?
As 320mb points out, backups are handled by the editor themselves, not kde or gnome.

If I'm not mistaken, if you have RCS (revision control system) enabled, backups are made of files when they are changed. Disable RCS (at your own risk, of course).

I believe he is talking about how KWrite, Kate, and KDevelop always create a back-up file that ends with a tilde (~). I agree those are annoying and I would like to find out how to disable them as well. Or maybe even better, create them with a dot prefix or put the backups in a .backup subdirectory of the pwd. That would be nice

I've looked everywhere and I have not been able to find this option in KWrite, Kate, nor KDevelop3. Are you sure that it is there? I'd really, really like to know how to disable this option because as Necronomicom already pointed out, its annoying.

Not to sound like an ass but you must not have looked too hard
In Kwrite:
1. Settings -> Configure Editor
2. Click 'Open/Save'
3. Unselect 'Backup on Save -> Local Files'
In Kate:
1. Settings -> Configure Kate
2. Follow steps 2-3 above.
ROOts: you can change the tilde to a period if you like from the same dialogue.
