Is there any open source CAD sofware that reads DWG files?

Hi.
Im looking for free CAD sofware under FC5, but still havent found open source CAD that can read DWG files.
What I have tested is:
1. Qcad (good, but doesn't read DWG , you can convert from dwg to dxf)
2. Sagcad (did not like it)
3. KiCAD (it fine, but it is more fore projects and not for modeling. It something in place of Visio, and better than Kivio, Dia)
4. PythonCAD - (good sofware, but doesn't read DWG, DWF, very simple soft)

still downloading a lot of soft and trying out.

if somebody KNOWS something free for wieving or editing DWG files, post some info here!

thank you in advance!

Autocad 13 lite apparently, i use it at college and remember reading that it works under wine, there was a step by step guide somewhere on the net by some South African architect who had it running in red hat. There whole office was on linux.

sorry I just notice you said free, i think my eyes skipped over that the first time i read it.

Blender ?

It's for 3D work but not sure if you really want it for architechture work though.

It's good though.

marisdembovskis 11-01-2006 12:50 AM

Chuong, you say this one:
http://www.blender.org/cms/Blender.31.0.html
correct?

Chuong 11-01-2006 02:29 AM

Yes, that's Blender - THE Open Source 3D modeling, rendering, animation and post production application that's cross platform for Linux, Mac OS, Windows, Solaris, Irix, FreeBSD.

I installed blender, but can not start it
[mariss@localhost /]$ blender
Compiled with Python version 2.4.
Checking for installed Python... got it!
X Error of failed request: GLXBadContext
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 23
Current serial number in output stream: 23

what is wrong?

Chuong 11-03-2006 02:21 AM

Have you tried:

yum install blender

? That should install all dependencies for Blender.

marisdembovskis 11-06-2006 06:55 AM

yah, I installed it with
Yum -y install blender.
But there are some errors (posted before) lookig what's wrong there.
Thanks for help, Chuong.

You've got an ATi graphics card or an Nvidia one?

Blender should work nicely and install with little problems.

I'm not sure what's that problem you have there but you can try asking the Blender people at the Blender Artist forums:

I too, need a Linux based CAD program that reads and converts AutoCad files. Tried many from http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html but still not happy. PythonCad looks the best but it is limited with AutoCad drawings.

Can you send me the CAD file?

I'll see if I can convert it using Blender.

Chuong 11-19-2006 04:58 AM

Actually, Blender can read AC3D files, but I'm not sure if it can read DWG. . .

. . . strange . . . I remember I saw DWG before in Blender. . . where did it go?

marisdembovskis 11-20-2006 07:53 AM
