emerge --ask packagename

should do it. If there are dependencies, it'll put those in too, automatically. If, for some reason, you don't want it to do this, add the --nodeps option.

emerge --ask --nodeps packagename

That may not be what you want to do, though...it probably won't run or even build correctly without it's dependencies. If you've already installed said deps manually, than use emerge --inject depname to tell Portage that you've done so, and it'll handle it intelligently. If it's attempting to install dependencies you don't want or need, check your make.conf to make sure you don't have any unwanted USE flags.

Yes there is...but perhaps it's not in older versions? Regardless, adding --ask is just a personal habit - it has emerge confirm it's actions with you before it begins. You can omit it and emerge will do the same thing...it just won't ask you. The --pretend option is similar.

However, if you're using an old version of e,emerge/portage, that's the first thing you should update. type:

emerge portage
