Hi there,

I am bit confused as to what you are looking for. Are you looking for dns name associated with a particular IP?

When you say that you VNC your server using vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxort_number you can replace xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the server name if you have DNS configured.

Also if you have DNS configured you can perform the reverse lookup to find the server name: ping -a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Also you can do nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to find the server name.

PS: (: p is appearing as smiley ;-))

sorry for the confusion.

I am not interested in the DNS & IP.

First i invoke a vncserver at the machine called my_machine.
Then I use vncviewer to remote to my_machine. The vncviewer will have a session name (i think) called "my_machine :1" it could be :2 or :3 ...etc

I want to grep the current session name which is "my_machine:1".
