Is there a sound app that doesn't squeak my music?

I've tried a few and the playback is pretty -- squeaky -- .

For example, I'll say that when I play music with juk - it speeds up the songs on occassion, esp when starting a new one, so there is a loud and horrible squeaking.
Just so all things are equal -- these tunes are on an ntfs drive. Does it matter?

Is it a setting? WHat?
Here it comes -- sounded friggin gorgeous in xp -- cough, cough

hope you have already tried xmms, you could also check out the real player for linux from real.com

Thanks for your response.

yep -- tried it.

Wanna stay away from anything REAL, though.

I am still wondering if it is because my tunes are on an ntfs drive. Or because of the windows software I use to rip all the tunes (lame, cdex)...who knows?

Do you know?

Had a similar problem.
In xmms, my mp3 playback of tunes stored on an NTFS partition in WinXP wouldn't play back properly. I got popping, squeaking and so on.
I couldn't really find a solution to this but there's something about this in the Grip help files (I think, I read a lot of stuff, so if it isn't there I apologise) about some encoders not coding properly - they sacrifice a good copy for speed. I assumed that this was the problem and ripped the tracks again using Grip and encoding them with .ogg. These play 100% fine (even better quality) in xmms, and .ogg files are a fraction smaller than mp3's, so it's a bonus all round.

Yeah -- I'm not about to re-rip 4000 tunes.

Thanks for your response
