Is there a program that automatically corrects metadata for video files?

I bought (yes, bought) seasons 1-12 of Gunsmoke and all of the Gunsmoke made-for-tv movies on DVD because it's my favorite show. I got a program "MakeMKV" that rips the DVDs and turns them into MKV files. Great so far, right?

Well, the problem is I have over 300 episodes of Gunsmoke with no metadata. Even the names of the files aren't very useful. title1.mkv, title2.mkv, etc. I started naming the files individually, but it's very time-consuming. It would be even more time-consuming to add metadata for each and every episode.

So, question: is there a program that will automatically seek out and add (or correct) the metadata for video files?

I am a Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon user.

where do you want that program to look for the metadata?
on the DVD itself? maybe it just isn't there? i honestly don't know if DVDs store metadata.
this is also a problem with CDs; i know an internet database for Audio CD metadata exists, but it rarely works 100% automatic. maybe this extends to DVDs as well?
