Is there a non-network name for a linux box?

On windows, the system properties dialog allows you to
name and briefly describe your computer. Is there a
similar, network-independent name one can assign to
and retrieve from a linux installation?

DNS and the hosts file name network interfaces/cards,
as opposed to naming the host computer.

Bill.

If you set your windows machine to, say, "WinAMD2400" and ping "WinAMD2400" from another computer you get a response right?

I think your looking for a hostname in Linux. Change the hostname in /etc/sysconfig/network and that should stick. You can also type 'hostname <YourNewName>'. I also think redhat has a GUI tool under system settings - network.

Hostname found

Thanks, pljvaldez and hockeyman, /etc/sysconfig/network was what I needed.
