Is Postfix an Email Server?

Hey everyone

I need to set up an email server in Mandrake 10.0 for intranet email.
I need to be able to create accounts for my domain and so on.

Is postfix used for this?

If so, how can I set it up?

Thanks

Dane

you can use postfix for that stuff, but setting up a mailserver requires little bit know how.
i suggest reading some how-to's and/or get good documentation for the one you finally will use.

i use exim (which is the default for debian) with exiscan (clamav/.. virusscanner-frontend)
another quite popular mta is qmail, but i think there are other good out there. imho forget about sendmail. while it's a awful great mta which can do lot of things (antialiasing,..) it's hard to install, configure and maintain. so you better keep hands off it (=my really subjective opinion;-).
i suggest to use the one which is best supported and maybe allready well integrated (and documented) in you mandrake sys unless you don't need some special features another may supply.

Postfix is a "mail transport agent" (MTA) which basically gets the mail from one server to another. Other common MTAs include sendmail and Qmail. The MTA is just one piece of the "mail server". You need to have a method to allow your users to access their mail once it arrives at the proper location. Typically these are POP or IMAP servers, although some sites do additionally provide web access.

you should take a look at some howto's to get a view about that topic.
see www.tldp.org for the mail-admin-howto an others. they will provide useful info here.
you may also google for mta-specific information. have a look at mandrake's site if they have config-helps there.
