Is it possible to dump only the audio of an RTMP video stream?

Hello,

i have an RTMP video stream which i am able to open with VLC or rtmpdump / livestreamer. The stream consists of audio and video. Let's say i do not always need the video. Is it possible to dump only the audio so that i could also listen to it when i am on my way to somewhere? Or create a streaming relay server which would broadcast only the audio and not the video?

Thanks!

Isn't there an option in VLC to convert/stream to some of a few formats? Guess ffmpeg should be able to do it too.

I would save the stream and then extract the audio.

Well i thought it could be possible to do it "on the fly" because this is an online live stream. With ffmpeg i have only experience with files offline.
