I am trying to install a program by using the usual
./configure and
make commands.
The INSTALL text file says the following..
Quote:
you must have glib version 1.2 or higher (but less than 2.0)
This can be found at www.gtk.org
2. you must have fftw version 2.1 or higher (but less than 3.0)
This can be found at www.fftw.org

These are very old. My OS is Ubuntu 10.04. The versions of fftw and glib are later than those asked for. The fftw (Fast Fourier) version 3 has an incompatible API, though the providers say

Using an older version of glib is entirely different territory!
Can one simply install an older version of glib without dangers of messing up all the other programs that use the C libraries?
