is it bad to hate gaim?

am i a mean person because i hate gaim?

it's not really my fault anyways that the dam thing don't compile...
i mean, seriously, why is it that when i dl something that supposedly works, and i go to compile it, i get a bunch of errors saying that there are missing functions, or certain functions have not been defined. should the programmers already know how to program!?

then again, i'm prolly the only one having this problem.

ooops...is this a double post? last i checked, when i posted about this problem before, alot of people viewed the stupid thread, but no one responded...so i'm starting think, mabe i am the only single person on the face of this earth that is having this problem.

(don't mind my hatefull, sarcastic, and angriness in my post, i'm just having a really bad 2 days, and don't need gaim to be giving me $h!t !!!!!)

would anyone know how to get apt-get to work properly also? everytime i use it, it installs gaim v0.59. how the hell old is that!!!

Gaim sucks to compile from source. On a redhat 8 box I would get apt-get working and then just install it that way.

but how do i fix apt? i compiled THAT from source too. it works kind of ok, except when i install gaim, it gives me version 0.59.1 and gaim is up to v .77 now. Now, i was thinking it could be the repository, but i can't ever find a good one. Now, if YOU have apt-get, and it works fine, could u lend me a copy or ur file with the repository? (it's beenawhile since i've worked with that, is a .conf file?)

thnx

apt-get is working just fine. Apt-get will not install nothing but the newest aviable version of such package.

apt-get use a list of servers, in these servers there are different sections where you could install packages in the stable release, unstable, and testing.

For more info use the following:

~$ man apt-ge t
~$ info man-get
www.google.com for apt-get

Compiling a software is always a special proccess where you need all the ingredients, like cooking. The programmer knows how to program, we the newbies knows how to compile? Most often.. nope.

BTW. A pice of advice: You can attract more flies with honney than with vinagar.

Yeah, I'm learning to despise GAIM, too, wether my issues are my fault or not.

Blatant newb, learning along ok. I, too, am trying to get Gaim0.77 to work.

Started out not even knowing how to MAKE, now I'm having the same issue w/ Gaim.

My LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set to usr/local/lib, where Glib installed.

I've tried various RPM's, since I'm using SuSE, they keep trying to install the old 0.67 RPM off the 9.0 CDs. I did manage succesfully to get upgraded from 0.67 to 0.72 via the SuSE website.

Any pointers for me?

Maybe you are too pissed off to cooperate and search the HOW-TO for apt (apt-get) so, I gonna give them to you; http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch1.en.html

Now here is a tip: Install 'apt-spy' then from the command line type 'apt-spy'

This will do a search for the FASTEST mirror aviable to you. After scoring a bunch of them (20-30) apt-spy will install the best choice.

After using apt-spy it will overrride your /etc/apt/sources.list file (containing the list of places to get packages for apt-get), so your CD's will not be used from now on. (unless you really care, you can later learn how to include them in the list with apt-cdrom)

One last thing to have in considerations is if you want the stable versions, unestable or testing as I mentioned in previous post. (the HOW-TO provides info on this also)

i have tried rpm, but that runs into dependicy trouble. I tried to install the packages it wants, but those run into their own dependicy trouble, so on and so forth...

Now, one quick question...what type of honey are we talking about? Is this more of the honey u get from bees type honey, or are we talking about syrup...is aunt jemima preferable?

Ok, so, u say that if i install and run apt-spy, that will overright my file and give me the better of the repositories? I DO understand, somewhat, how apt-get works. I used to have rh9, and it had apt-get already stock. It worked perfectly then, which means to me it had the proper repositories. yeah yeah, i read all the man and how-tos, but nothing really told me which repository is best. i think that's what it all boils down too.

ok, trying apt-spy...

thnx

Here is what stable, unstable and testing means:
http://www.debian.org/releases/

IF you want to live in the bleeding edge... change 'stable' in your /etc/apt/sources.list for 'unstable'

ok, tried apt-spy and followed the readme file, but apt-get keeps saying:

[root@localhost apt-spy-3.1]# ./apt-spy update
fopen: No such file or directory
Error opening mirror file. Exiting.
[root@localhost apt-spy-3.1]#

it kept giving me this error for any options i chose and didn't make a diff whether i was root or not.

ok, back to my original questions, if i list the 2 dependency files that the rpm version of gaim gives me, can you guys tell me where i can find them and what packages have them?

edited: oh, also, is apt-spy ONLY for debian? i think that that might be why it wasn'tworking, even though i installed from source

Extracted from http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap...pt-get.en.html
-------------------------------------------------------
3.8 How to keep a mixed system

People are sometimes interested in using one of the Debian versions as its main system distribution and one or more packages from another branch.

To set up what is your main version of Debian you should edit the /etc/apt/apt.conf to contain the following line:

APT:efault-Release "version";

Where version is the version of Debian you want to use as the main distribution. The versions you can use are stable, testing and unstable. To install packages from another version, then, you must you APT in the following way:

# apt-get -t distribution install package

For that to work, though, you need at least one APT source line in your /etc/apt/sources.list for the distribution you want the package from, and the package must exist on that source.

You can also request a specific version of a package using the following sintax:

# apt-get install package=version

For example, the line below will install version 2.2.4-1 of the nautilus package.:

# apt-get install nautilus=2.2.4-1

IMPORTANT: the `unstable' version of Debian is the version to which the newest versions of Debian packages are uploaded first. This distribution sees all of the changes that packages go through, both small ones and more drastic ones which affect many packages or the whole system. For this reason, this version of the distribution should not be used by inexperienced users or by those who need proven stability.

The `testing' distribution is not necessarily best than `unstable', because it does not receive security updates quickly. For servers and other production systems stable should always be used.

apt-spy is a binary. You should not be using './'

The chars './' are used to run scripts.

it's finaly working!!! woooot!!! ok, so i don't hate gaim anymore, i just really really like cvs :-D

but that still doesn't make sense to me. why would the cvs version work, and not compiling from source? i thought there is no difference except that the cvs version is the latest changes where as source is just every few months they package the complete changes from over time...right?

incase u haven't noticed, i am still somewhat of a newb ...still haven't completely mastered linux yet
