Is asterisk what I am looking for?

Hello!

I'm the laziest person I've ever met. I want to be able to call from the bedroom into the kitchen, or from the kitchen to the basement.

I was thinking of using some skype setup with some IP cordless phones; but I'm all about other options. It seems that using Asterisk I can use old-school phones connected to my existing home phone lines (I have no telephone hooked up at my house, I'm a cell phone only home). But, I could be way off because it seems very hard to find actual info on getting it setup.

So, does anyone have some info on doing what I want? Is asterisk it?

My ultimate goal if possible would be to plug in old phones to my existing telephone jacks, and somehow also plug a PC running asterisk into another jack to "power" the system.

Thanks for any info!

Cool

This may help, or it may not.

I recently purchased some phones manufactured by Steuartel which, connected over standard phone lines, which had the ability to preset a number which if dialed from somewhere inside the network would cause that phone to ring.

I'm not sure how to do this but it maybe possible to somehow supply power to these phones using some kind of circuit.

Update: I ran a check on my phone lines here and I got a reading of around 50volts. If you are the DIY type then maybe you can find (or make) some kind of transformer which can make this kind of voltage from a battery maybe you can make it work.

That might be a great option, thank you!

I'll probably play with Asterisk to see if I can make it do anything like I want, and when I fail I'll probably go the above route.

Thanks!

Cool
