irssi won't start

I've just reinstalled Slackware (12.0) on my system and I'm having a problem with irssi 0.8.12. When I try to run it as a regular user, it does not start or give me an error message of any kind. Strangely enough, it works when run as root.

I have tried removing the ~/.irssi directory as recommended to me by someone on another forum, but that did nothing.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Is there any way to get irssi to spit out an error message?

As I've said, this is a fresh install (apart from upgrading irssi to the latest version) so I'm not entirely sure what could be causing this problem.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, it seems to be working now (I'm not sure what fixed it exactly), is there any way to close the thread?
