with my ipod mini, the problem was caused when my computer mounted it automatically. I was able to use it fully when I unmounted it (umount /dev/[devicename] then mounted it myself using /etc/fstab.

There are 2 partitions on mine. Don't know why but you may have the "wrong" one mounted. Perhaps the OS is being too helpful and mounting the device for you, as happened in my case.
