Intranet Webserver

Hi guys,

I would like to set up my own intranet webserver, i will be doing this just so i can solely learn how setting up a webserver works then i can move on to making tihs accessable from the web.

What sort of software do i need to run?

Lets say for example, i create a page called index.htm on my pc (192.168.1.100). How would i set my laptop up so that when other computers on my home network type my ip address into a web browser the index.htm page is displayed. Is there simple software for this?

My computer is running SuSE 9.2, i have tried to find information on doing this but so far i have only found inforation telling me how to set up a webserver accessable to the internet rather then just my home LAN.

Can any1 point me in the right direction of some tutorials for this please.

I would really like to learn about web servers and how they work, i think setting this up on my home network for now would be the best way.

Cheers guys

Just to add, i would like the software to be simple, i can always change software once my experiance grows

hi,

so you're running suse 9.2 - nice distro. for web server purposes, look no further than apache, which you should find on your installation disks (fire up YaST, software installation, ...)

as regards accessing pages within your LAN.. You've got a number of options. The easiest is to just use numeric IP addressing; eg, if the web server is running on 192.168.0.1 then you just need to enter something like 'http://192.168.0.1/index.html' into a browser connected on your LAN and all should be OK. If, on the other hand, you'd rather use names than numbers, then you can either delve into domain name servers (DNS), or for a small LAN, the easiest way is to use the /etc/hosts file.. basically, in this file you map the numeric IP addresses of the computers on your intranet to meaningful names. hope this makes some kind of sense. it's the way i do it - DNS is a bit hairy, and i don't fully understand it...
