Internet usage counter for Linux

Is there an application available for Ubuntu that will keep track of the amount you have downloaded while on the internet? I've just signed up with BT Broadband which has a monthly download limit, and although their installation software (Windows only) keeps track of this sort of thing, I wondered if there was a similar utility for Linux. It would need to just keep a track of amount downloaded per session, and the total be available to me when I need it. Failing that, I'll just have to remember to write down on paper the amount of megabytes downloaded after each session, and add it up myself!

Code:

sudo apt-get install bandwidthd

If you want a small commandline app try vnstat. Not sure if it's in the repos but I imagine it would be.

Yeah, it is. BTW, if you do a search for bandwidth in Synaptic you'll get tons of similar utilities.

Just make sure you have Universe enabled.

Thanks for the advice.

Download counter anomaly

I have installed vnstat as recommended.

There appears to be some discrepancy between the figures for uploading and downloading given by vnstat, and those provided by the Ubuntu System Monitor. Does anyone have any idea why this is? Surely, if they are both using the same calculation method, they should be identical? And how many different calculation methods should there be?!

It would probably be best to inquire with the author of the software. The page is here: http://humdi.net/vnstat/

Just search for the word 'email'.

Thanks. I've sent an e-mail. I'll post any substantive reply to this thread, for anyone's future reference.

My ISP provides a web interface (a day behind) - doesn't BT offer similar ?.
This looks good, but with multiple machines, I wonder about usefulness (for me).

I've never found an online counter for my BT Broadband account. I believe the Windows software that they supply with the router and startup package does provide download/upload totals, but this obviously doesn't work in Linux so I haven't bothered to install any of it.

It didn't take long - I received an ISP error message telling me my e-mail is undeliverable. So that's the end of that avenue. There is a help forum at that website. I'll try posting a message to that.
