internet stops working and wireless disconnects in Ubuntu 10.04

Hi Everyone

Im having problems with Ubuntu 10.04. My wireless disconnects frequently and firefox seems to stop working. it seems the connection times out sometimes when firefox stops. other times the connection just disconnects. When I was running 9.04 everything worked and nothing disconnected, so I know its not my computer.

My laptop is an IBM t40, 1.4 ghz, 2gig of ram.

It does not seem to mater if Im using the wireless or the wired connection. The problem happens either way.

does anyone have a solution for this?

thanks in advance

Vanessa

In the NetworkManager, which do you enable?
Is the cord good?
How strong is the signal from the router?

Get a new iso of the live cd and try running live to see if it works. (test iso md5 before you burn and burn at slowest speed)

I am wondering which is at fault. The distro or your hardware or some install error.

Could try mint or any other distro based on that too just to see. If all live works then I'd suspect some install error. As you say it did work find.

Hi Everyone
Thanks for the replies

What Ive done so far.

I downloaded the current iso of Ubuntu 10.04 and burned it slow, reinstalled using a
the same partition as before. I have 9.04 on 40gig, and 10.04 on 80gig. the swap
partition is in there somewhere.

the cable is good.
the router signal is 98%.
Enabled wireless, enabled networking, enabled notifications were all enabled to start with.

I installed wicd, and its running. Waiting to see if it works

Will keep you updated

Thanks for your suggestions

Hi everyone

I have been running wicd for two days now and there is no change, my wireless connection still
drops for no apparent reason.

Im wondering if Ubuntu changed wireless drivers or something, and if it is possible to change
back.

Im trying to find out what drivers im using in 9.04 so I can compare to 10.04.
havent found out yet.

Does anyone know about it or have an alternate solution?

thanks
Vanessa

There are numerous postings online about troubles with Intel wireless cards and various distros. Your IBM T40 is likely an Intel wifi box
as is my own Thinkpad X61.

No solution. No joy. You have company.
