Internet Explorer for Linux?

Dear All,
I am getting sick and tired of netscape/Mozilla and Konqueror. Too buggy for me. Does anybody know how I can get ANY version of Internert Explorer (4.0 ot above) to work under Linux? Thanx beforehand :)

LinuzRulz 05-22-2002 08:21 PM

holy sh*t

read the @*%$ threads!!
who makes the thing!! (hint: BILL GATES!!)

send freakin' smoke signals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shassouneh 05-22-2002 09:13 PM

Dude Take it easy.geez. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling/realizing that the web browsers in Linux don't match up to Internet Explorer. At least not YET!

trickykid 05-22-2002 11:38 PM

Actually I hate IE, with their no standards of compliance to W3C, but oh well.
Think about it though, IE is part of Windows OS, so it most likely needs more than just IE to run properly. If you want IE, you should just run Windows with an emulator in Linux, but what would be the point of that right, might as well just boot up into Windows is what I say.

neo77777 05-22-2002 11:49 PM

Use opera http://www.opera.com
if you'd fall for Internet Exploiter you might as well use Outpook Extreme and get all the nice features of it to run embeded nice code (with something like fsck mounted partitions) into e-mail once you preview it without even opening the supplied attachment which would delete your entire address book, put a backdoor, and send itself to everyone in your former address book, lol you must be dreaming saying

I'll try Opera. Is it free though? Or are they still forcing people to pay for it?

neo77777 05-22-2002 11:58 PM

ok the ad supported version is free - you'll have an ad window at the top right hand corner, ad-free version is 39 bucks I believe

shassouneh 05-23-2002 03:45 AM

cool Thanx. I'll check it out tommorow :D

acid_kewpie 05-23-2002 04:36 AM

well personally both Mozilla and Galeon ARE better than IE in any way you wish to comapre them.

Rashkae 05-23-2002 09:27 AM

To answer the quetion, if you want IE to run in Linux (for whatever reason, I don't think Mozilla buggy at all anymore), then purchase VMWare and install Windows.

twk 05-23-2002 08:51 PM

Mozilla is fairly stable now and faster than before. Galeon is also a pretty good choice

but I feel IE still faster and render better looking pages(even though it doesn't care about the standards...and endlesss security patches)

shassouneh 05-24-2002 01:10 AM

I c. Well you must admit that IE is a good browser. Yes Its not perfect, but there is no such thing as perfect software :). Anyways, It looks Like I might have to live with Netscape and its clones (Mozilla). Thanx for the replies everyone :)

Sfin 05-24-2002 02:49 AM

Yeah I would say use opera. It has a nice feature where you can tell it to imitate IE5.0, so that the pages you goto think you are using a IE5.0 browser rather then Opera, but still this will not work 100% of the time.

I haven't ued Mozilla or Netscape, so I can't tell if they have the same feature.

To go a little off the subject, the reason why IE seems like it renders pages better and they look better on IE, has nothing to do with IE being better then any other browser. The problem is that IE goes against the Web Standards. Since most people use IE, many web developers just don't care, and produce the code that works for IE, even though it is against standards, which means it won't work properly for any other browser.

IE is so bad with standards, that when I used to take a webpage development class, I had to make seperate pages for IE, and a seperate one for every other browser. Had to do different Javascript, and DHTML.

Just my $.02.

Brion 05-24-2002 04:24 AM

i wouldn't be a true KDE advocate if i didn't tell u to try konqueror 3.0.1

it's an excellent browser. It's almost as good as mozilla (rendering wise), but it's a lot faster and it's well integrated into KDE. Seeing as how u like IE i suppose Tabbed browsing isn't really a concern of u so the fact that konq still doesn't have tabs shouldn't bother u (the tabs are coming in konq 3.1 though ;))

fatgod 05-24-2002 09:37 AM

I'm with Brion, Konqueror 3 all the way ;)

Even under windows I used to use netscape though, it is faster and doesn't crash when you've got 20 instances open.

Calum 05-24-2002 09:50 AM

not to start up on the whole pointless browser war thing, but to answer the question, i say use opera. Also, re: the comment about mozilla and its clones, what do you think internet explorer is?it's the worst and most buggy mozilla clone in the world.

but if you do want it to run, try running it in wine, wineX, win4lin or get VMWare and install windows in that. I haven't tried any of those options and i never will. so good luck doing it.

Finally, if you were running HP-UX or Solaris, then you could run Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express (where would be the fun in outlook though, if you know that none of the viruses you got through it would work on your system?) here's the link:
http://www.micro$oft.com/unix/ie/default.asp
[edit- don't click the link, look at the word 'micro$oft', you will have to fix that 's' if you want it to work right...]
You will quickly realise though, that while they are UNIX implementations of Internet Explorer, the source code is still denied to you so you can not recompile for your own system....

back to the old drawing board. Either that or use mozilla. It's open source, unlike even Opera.

Filsta 05-24-2002 10:03 AM

amen =)

sewer_monkey 05-24-2002 12:42 PM

Why not try running it in WINE and sending Bill Gates a screenshot? :D I know it works, because I tried it. I got Windoze Media Player 7.x working too. :P Grokster 1.5.1 is next!

shassouneh 05-24-2002 01:54 PM

Fellows, I am using Konqueror 3.0 / SuSE 7.3 / KDE 3 as we speak. Its a very fast browser indeed. Still though, It doesn't render some pages as good as Mozilla, and on some sites like BankOfAmerica.com you HAVE to use IE or Netscape/Mozilla. I shall give Opera a shot. Let me know If any of you come across another decent webn browser. Thanx for all the feedcabk everybody. It is much appreciated :)

have u tried changing the user agent string to IE or Netscape/Mozilla?
in the Tools menu, there's a submenu called Change Browser Identification. U could set it to all sorts of browsers and some sites can be tricked like that so they actually do work perfectly :)

but i do agree with u that mozilla is still better at rendering certain pages. but... if u look at the progress between konq 2.2.2 (which was still basically unusable as a browser imho) and konq 3.0.1 the future of konq as one of the premier browser on unix systems is looking very bright :)

i actually wouldn't be surprised at all if Konq 3.1 would surpass Mozilla on almost every field

guerilla fighta 05-24-2002 03:35 PM

i use opera under windoze on my other pc and i have to say that its a damn fine web browser, IE may be refined but it doesnt really live up to operas features. In my opinion you should use opera (the adverts-in version is free :D) because its free, fast, stable and just a pleasure to use - although its crashed out a couple of times for some strange reason!

also i, since im fairly new to linux i havent had a change to really have a good look at mozilla or the new konqueror and i would appreaciate any browswer recomendations. :)

shassouneh 05-24-2002 05:57 PM

Cool. I changed the browser Identification and tried BankOfAmerica.com again and still no good. Anyways, maybe Bankofamerica is not sucha good site to try anyways.
I will have to give opera a try, firstly I'm gonna look into RC2 of the new Mozilla :)

neo77777 05-24-2002 06:16 PM

As for me when I encounter a site that says I must use a particular browser I never come back to their site, I think it is a preragative of a costumer to use a browser of his/her choice, this is an indication of a weak design not targeted to the end-users.
So expanding this issue, I and a couple of more developers argued with IT management to use non-windows OS at home to connect to the company's network, they were imposing rules of using windows tools to connect (PcAnyware, etc.), now there is an option for us to use other tools like vnc, etc.

Druaga 05-24-2002 11:05 PM

I love Mozilla 1 RC2 (i might have RC3 i'm not sure). But it is fast, reliable, doesnt screw up code like IE does.
IE (or most of microsofts products) doesnt bother to go with any of the standards, so it fucks up the code a lot. I've never had a problem with Mozilla and i love it. Konqueror 3 is pretty sweet looking but it has a few bugs.

....and hey, dont bash the guy for asking if there is an MS product for Linux, they did make IE for Mac (it was probably just to prove that they help competition though)

shassouneh 05-25-2002 12:53 AM

LOL, no offense taken. I totally agree that Microsoft respect no one and nothing. Anyways, I'm looking on google to find the latest Mozilla RPM :)

By the way, Microsoft DID release software for unix, after all they DID release IE for HP-UX and Mac. Even though MacOX X and HP_UX are not exactly LINux, but they are Unices :)

The best place for that is www.mozilla.org , no need to search on google, probably number 1 site that comes up is mozilla.org anyways.

shassouneh 05-25-2002 02:02 AM

cool. I will take a look at it tommorow. I'm heading to bead after I work on some Java for a class :)
