interface connectivity status


hi,
i want to get the status of the various interfaces connected to the network.i used some associated interfaces.these are used if one interface is down other will provide the connection.if i use ifconfig it willl dispaly the interface detail even if it down. if i use the ping to particular IP ping will give the result success.how will i over come this problem.is there any other way to find the solution.

you have a single adress acropss two nic's? this sounds like a channel bond, and if you're doing it correctly you can just check the contents of /proc/net/bond0/. if you're not using bond, how are you actually doing this? ifconfig output oes still say whether an interface is up or not though, just look for the "UP" in the output.

ifconfig should list only the up interfaces, ifconfig -a lists all interfaces that have corresponding drivers loaded (ie they exist, but are not up). Maybe there is an alias of ifconfig to ifconfig -a ?

i have LAN which has two interfaces.these are associated interfaces if one interface is down second interface is automatically up for not distrubing the process.if sudenly one interface is down another one is automatically up.if you give ping to down interface it will give ping success result.how will i overcome this problem.
