I have an interesting resolution problem. When I boot up in linux (FC4) everything including the login screen is in 800x600 resolution but it's in such a fashion that the bottom right of the screen is cut off. Instead of the login prompt being in the center of the screen it's actually near the bottom right corner. Although as soon as I log in it goes to the correct 1024x768 resolution. Here is my xorg.conf file:

After logging in to a GUI session, if you press CTRL-ALT-F2 for example, is the screen OK.
You might want to post your lilo.conf if you are using Lilo or the menu.lst file if you are using grub. Before the X11 Server is started, this is where the resolution is set. Also, does your kernel have frame buffer support? I tend to prefer the vga=791 setting, however I think that uses the frame buffer.
I had a laptop were the display would be 1/2 sized and centered. This was even during the installation program. The solution in my case was a bios upgrade. There was a bug which didn't allow the screen to be resized.
when I press CTRL-ALT-F2 it goes to a text login screen. I don't know how to get back to X though, but th text screen looks normal.
I don't know how to tell if my Kernal has frame buffer support.
