Instant Messengers

I use Yahoo Messenger on windows and it's great for voice and video communications.

However the linux version of Yahoo Messenger does not support voice or web-cams. Can anyone suggest an alternative?

ever tried another messenger like gaim, kopete ... there are a lot for yahoo out there :)

kasperhans - I looked at the gaim site earlier - it doesn't appear to support voice chats or webcams...

Check out kopete then....I really don't know cause I can't use it till I configure it with proxychains. If you don't use a proxy you'll be fine.

I've tried kopete. Downloaded the RMP from SuSE (it's an old version). It closes when I try to set up my Yahoo account. I'll try a newer version but it doesn't have voice chat or webcam support anyway. I guess it's something not available to Linux users!

Have you looked at ayttm? It's supposed to use gnomemeeting to do MSN webcam chats though so far it seems to have trouble finding my installation of gnomemeeting!

Of course you can used gnomemeeting for chats though that will work via netmeeting IIRC...

I have tried ayttm and it's great! except for one thing:-
The damn webcam won't work, all i get is a grey screen (yahoo). No errors come up from the console and the plugin loads ok. I know my webcam is ok, it works in xawtv. If anyone knows how to fix this please tell!

For voice and WebCam support for yahoo messenger you can try gyach :
1. Download http://www.politicalcrossfire.com/te...nstall.tar.bz2 , and save it to your home directory (important!).

2. Run these commands in the terminal, in sequential order:
Code:

tar -xjf gyach-install.tar.bz2
cd gyach
sudo ./install
