Installing Ximian Evolution on Slackware with Red Carpet

I am trying to i install Ximian Evolution on Slackware 9 and am having some trouble. I went to the Ximian site and it said the best way to install Evolution if a binary wasn't available for your distro was with Red Carpet. I downloaded red-carpet-2.0.1-0.ximian.6.1.1.src.rpm from the Ximian ftp (in pub/redcarpet/mandrake-91-i586/source) and tried to ./configure it, but it says I need version 2.0 of pygtk. I went to the pygtk site and it said the latest version is 1.99, which I tried installing anyways but still resulted in the same error from Red Carpet's ./configure.

What am I doing wrong? Do I really need Red Carpet to install Evolution easily? In the ftp folder I mentioned above there's a bunch of other files. Should I download those too?

Thanks in advance.

No, you don't need Red Carpet. You can download the individual packages from here if you want to build it manually: www.linuxpackages.net or you can make it easy on yourself and install the latest verison of Dropline, which you can get here: www.dropline.net/gnome/

Personally, I am a huge fan of Dropline, and the latest version includes Evolution v1.4 as part of the default installation. Very Sweet!! Basically, Dropline will automatiacally install a large number (> 160) of common packages and other goodies, and I have found it to be invaluable in taking my rig to the next level. Note that Dropline will set your default window manager to Gnome, but if you prefer another, it's easy to set it back to your preferred choice. Overall it's pretty easy, and I'd recommend you give it a shot. -- J.W.
