Question installing xfree86 and configuring

I recently downloaded and installed XFree86 4.4.0. The installation went fine, but when I booted back up, I apparrently didn't have any screens configured. My login screen came up alright, but there was little on the desktop. All I had was a little window in he upper left of the desktop. It had 4 buttons in it, I remember that one of them was shut down. I remember I also had a terminal window. Anybody heard of anything like this?

that'll be TWM. you need to configure X, possibly by just creating an ~/.xinitrc file,. e.g. "echo exec gnome-session > ~/.xinitrc"
