Installing WinXPPro as guest OS on VMware 4.0 on RH 9

I am running RH 9 on an IBM ThinkPad T20
I installed VMwareWorkstation 4.0 and am trying to install WIN XP Pro as a guest OS and the install just doesn't take off.

I pop in the XP install CD and start vmware and turn on the VM. The VM goes through the BIOS setup and then just does nothing.
I also tried reversing the sequence i.e. startup on vmware and turn on the VM and then pop in the XP install disk - same results.
I do have the Phoenix BIOS (in VMware) setup to boot from the CD-ROM.

I also tried creating an ISO image of the XP install disk and tried to install from the ISO image. Still no go !

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

The error message I get is

Oct 21 11:31:24: vcpu-0| Unknown int 10h func 0x2000

Same error message whether I use the CD or an ISO image.
