Installing via apt-get software causes issues.
I just installed debian stable and added repositories to install nvidia drivers and amarok. I have both the stable and testing repositories, with the stable commented out. Any time i try to install firefox, thunderbird, or pretty much anything else, it says that KDE, Gnome, the X Server, and about every installed program must be removed. I'd go through with the install, but this has happened before, and I don't know how to fix it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You should have installed Testing in the first place. Apt wants to delete all those programs because it wants to install xorg instead of xfree86.
I think you'll probably have difficulty getting the new Nvidia drivers to install on Sarge. Assuming this is a fresh install, and you haven't accumulated a lot of critical data, get the Etch netinstal .iso, (about 100 MB), and start over. |
Ok, i'll try that. I'm wondering though, does that still use the 2.4 kernel? i have big issues trying to use 2.6.

I think Testing is now using 2.6.16
I can't imagine that it's not an improvement in every way over 2.4 |
nope, unfortunately its not. causes a kernel panic at boot that i can't figure out.

Try it again with the Etch installer
