installing/unpacking .tar packages

I've downloaded a couple of themes for KDE. The packages that I downloaded are .tar packages and I'm not sure how to unpack/install them. I've searched the web but could only find instructions on installing tar.gz packages, which, I already know how to work with. How would I unpack/install these packages?

Thanks for the help.

A .tar.gz is a compressed tar archive. Your .tar is simply a tar archive. Think about how you unpack the former --

tar -xzvf whatever.tar.gz

All you need is

tar -xvf whatever.tar

to unpack it. You may have to move them to a certain location; I don't know the specifics of your package, obviously.

Thanks for the help. That worked.

Does anyone know to actually install the theme once it's unpacked? KDE has a nice theme installer but I'm not really sure how to use it. When I click on the "Install New Theme" button, it then asks where the theme is that I would like to install. What would I point it to? The theme that I unpacked is full of different .xpm and .jpg files, one .schema file, and one .themerc file. Just not sure what to pick.

When I choose one the files listed, I get an error that states "The file is not a valid icon theme archive".

Thanks, again, for your help.

Does the tar file you downloaded include any install instructions? I remember trying to figure out exactly where each file needs to be, but it's been a while. The main location should be /usr/share/apps/kwin (for everyone) or ~/.kde/share/apps/kwin for you alone, but that's pretty much all I can think of...
