installing .tgz files


Hi im new to Linux, can you please tell me how to install .tgz files on Red Hat 9. Thanks in advance

cd /folder/with/the/.tgz/in # eg /home/username
tar xzf file.tgz
cd file
./configure --(options)
make
su
password
make install

Thanks mate, do i have to put the following?

./configure --(options)
make
su
password
make install

Well, cd into the folder first and change --(options) for whatever you want. To find what options are available run ./configure --help first and read. Usually it works if you just use plain old ./configure
