Installing Spotify Linux Without Root

I'm using a networked computer that I don't have root access to, and I'd like to install the Linux Spotify Preview or alternatively get spotify to work through Wine (which I would also have to install without root).

The problem is that I only seem to be able to find .deb or .rpm files for spotify linux, which need root access, has anyone found a way around this?

The system I'm running on is Fedora 11, Kernel Linux 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.x86_64. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, it would stop me having to carry my laptop in everyday just to listen to music!

I know this is totally not helpful at all but there's a reason you need root access to install software and if you don't have root access then that means someone else has a responsibility to ensure your machine is in compliance with a specific corporate policy. If Spotify is authorized then a call to that person should get it installed in no time!

Have you thought about something like Pandora or Last.FM, that run entirely in the web browser?

Sorry again for not being helpful

Well I am on a small university research network, we are using linux machines that are installed with a standard image including many useful tools for astrophysics research, but not much else. We are essentially free to install anything on our own machines, aslong as we don't clog up the limited space we have for the home area. I could email the sys admin and ask if he will install spotify for me, but he is overworked and currently focussing on a major overhaul of the network (increasing the capacity of the home area being one of his priorities), so I'm sure my request will go to the back of the queue.
My idea was to install spotify on my local disk, without root access, so as not to clog up either the home area, or the sys admin's inbox. I thought that maybe some other people might have tried this.

I just can't imagine a university allowing one to download and listen to music. I wouldn't allow any internet access to controlled systems. Not a good security model and not a very good use of public funds or in the best interest of the public.

I'd be willing to bet however that the dummies that run universities allow that and would even let you have admin/root privileges. I have seen some silly stuff and total lack of control at some places.

What would prevent you from installing malware if you had root access?
