Installing software under Linux
Well, first of all I am new to Linux though I have used other OS's. I am trying to install KDE 3.0 under SuSE 7.3. My first attempt resulted in amusing notes from the OS something to the effect that it had panicked and committing suicide. From that message I was able figure out that a) I didn't really have a clue about what I was doing and b) I screwed something up. I downloaded the KDE 3.0 files from the SuSE site. I don't think it is a package but again I'm not sure. Advice on how to proceed is gratefully accepted. thanks in advance

does the file you downloaded have an rpm extension or is it tar.gz or similar? would be good to know that.

j-ray, thanks for your quick reply. Sorry to be so slow getting back to you. It's been a busy week. The files have a .rpm extension.

If you got the file from Suse and they are .rpm extension you should try to install them with Yast1 - that worked for me when I did it.I don't remember for shure but i think you need to install them in a certain order. But that should be explained at the suse website.

it should be the normal dance:
./configure make make install right? |
