Chaps, I am trying to install LDOCE5 on ubuntu. It is all done, but it doestn' run properly and I wonder if anybody can help me at all.
When I open the application it says that there is a problem with WINE. It says the application has encountered a serious error and needs to close - sounds too much like windows!
The it goes on saying that "this can be caused by a problem in the program or deficiency in wine and to check the application database to find a solution". The application database site is this http://appdb.winehq.org/ and I am not sure how it can help me.
ALso, on that error windows there is a show details button that, when clicked brings up this:

It sounds too much like Windows because that's exactly what it is: a Microsoft Windows application.
From the sound of it, seems like you don't even know what wine is: it's a layer which implements Microsoft Windows APIs in Unix/X11/OpenGL, as to provide some kind of ability to run Windows binaries on a non-Windows system without emulation or virtualization. The appdb (application database) is a site containing wine-compatibility reports for various applications submitted by wine users, so you could find useful information for the installation of a program or the configuration needed in your WINEPREFIX to make it work correctly.
A small remark: please add an extended form for non-widespread acronyms. I had to search on Google to associate LDOCE5 with the Longman Dictionary Of Contemporary English 5 and I can still only guess that it's what you're trying to run.
Now, assuming that my guess is right, some kind of additional information would be appreciated:
how did you install it in the first place? It seems like there exists a Linux installer for it, so have you run it or have you run the Windows one?
have you got wine installed on your system from the repositories?

I believe you're jumping in the wrong thread. Use the search function on these forums to find the information you're looking for, then open a new thread if you couldn't find it. Have a look at this post of mine from another thread to answer your "disk drives" question.
Last but not least, have you ever heard of "pretty please"?
Hi 414N, sorry I am new to linux, and apologies for the acronyms, I will bear this in mind next time, your guess is right. For the dictionary, I have a cd and it is all installed now, for wine, I think I have installed it from a repository, but can't be 100% sure, is there anyway I can check through the terminal?

The problem is how it got installed. Given that I haven't got the slightest idea if the Linux installation on the CD installs a native Linux application (which would be the best) or wraps a Windows one using wine, you should tell me how you installed it. Have you launched the setup.sh script under the linux/ directory on the CD (as this page reports) or have you run something else, maybe with an "exe" suffix?

Seems like with
Code:
dpkg --get-selections | grep wine
you should be able to see if wine has been installed with a package from a repository.
ntu:~$
if it helps.
As for the application the cd from what I know - sorry I am not very good with computers and software installation so apologies in advance- was an ISO so I followed some steps I have found on the net to install it. I have the icon on the desktop now, so I believe it is installed
The icon on the desktop does not help to determine if you installed a native Linux application or a Windows one via wine, because wine too creates desktop icons when installing Windows programs.
Try to look inside your CD and see if there's a linux/ subdirectory with a setup.sh script inside and try to run it if it exists.
hi ya, thanks All I can see in there are the following folders:
ldoce5.app
ldoce5.data
linux
Quickfind
rr_moved
and the following files:
autorun.exe
autorun.inf
ldoce5.exe
linuxreadme.txt
macrreadme.txt
setup.exe
If I open the linux folder, inside I can see a setup.data folder a ldoce5.zip folder and setup.sh which is what I believe you were looking for. Now, before I run it, it occurred to me that a copy of the dictionary is already installed, shall I remove that first? If so how do I do it please?
thanks
I don't think it is needed, but if you have also an uninstallation icon on your desktop you could try using that.
Otherwise, try running
Code:
wine uninstaller
inside a terminal. You should see a window pop up with a list of installed Windows software (it's all installed inside ~/.wine). Uninstall it from there if it's on the list.
cooool! yep done that, i unistalled using the command from the terminal but the Dictionary icon from my desktop is still there, it is ok anyway?
If so I will try to reinstall it using the setup.sh, let me know if it is ok to continue please
thanks
I think that if you click "run in terminal" then a terminal should pop up with the output of the setup.sh script, without the need to type anything. Is that so?
