I've been trying out Knoppix for a couple of weeks, and, today, I decided to install it onto my hard drive. All of that went well. However, when I try and install programs I get this error:
<ho/gnome-panel-2.10.1-10.2.sam.2.i386.rpm';echo RESULT=$?
rpm: To install rpm packages on Debian systems, use alien. See README.Debian.
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
RESULT=1
You can't install rpm's in a Debian-based system. You need to first convert the rpm into a .deb (with Alien) and then install it with dpkg -i command. Still, since you are in a Debian system, you should check out apt-get. It does nearly everything for you automatically. Still, to get the rpm installed, here is what you do.
1 - Open a terminal, type "su" to become root, then
Wow guys, I feel like an idiot. I didn't realize how much I had come to rely on a GUI.
I got the programs installed easily enough, but it took me about 20 minutes extra, to figure out how to open them! Haha.
Anyway, thanks....
I have another question. I guess Knoppix doesn't have the drivers...but I play DVD's through my computer, out my S-video and into the tv. I've been trying for over a week, but I can't find any way to do this using linux. Am I going to have to rely on Windows for this one?
Also, my wireless network (Linksys wireless g) doesn't work. I don't know if it's because my pc card slots are not recognized or if it's because I don't have the driver for my card. Is there any way that I can tell?
Thanks again.
Another thing, I tried to go to your "Newbies, watch this before posting" swf, but I can't seem to get it to play.
If you have a nvidia graphics card, then it's you lucky day I guess. It's possible to get TV-out working flawless with Linux, once you have nvidia drivers installed. I've no experience with ATI card whatsoever ...
Again, if your card is nvidia, then go to nvidia and grab the drivers and follow the instructions in there. It's pretty straight forward. Post here or in a new thread if you get stuck. But try to install first, it is good a training
I'm glad you've tried to watch my link ^_^. If it did not work, it just means one thing: You need the flash-plugin.
I think you can install the flash plugin through synaptic (search for flash-plugin mozilla or something), or else, you can always go to macromedia and grab the plugin for Mozilla/Netscape.
