Installing software (java, adobe)

Hi, I'm totally new to the linux OS. I'm currently running on a version of Kubuntu and I need help installing software. As I said, i'm totally new to linux, so if there is a download manager that's easy and simple to use please point me in the direction.

Kubuntu has the apt-get package manager but for Java and and Adobe there are special install instructions. Head over to the manufactures website and review their install docs.

one question, whenever I go to the adobe site now I make sure I download the right version, but when I go to install it I always get "an unknown error has occurred". I can't give any type of but report for this and I clueless as to how I can fix it.
